A SENSIBLE AND HONORABLE SOLUTION TO THE GROUND ZERO CONTROVERSY
As the friend, special assistant and father-in-law of the late respected Honorable Islamic leader Imam W. D. Mohammed I am compelled to share with this nation, its people and the religious communities around the world the position that we as Muslim should seriously consider in the controversy that has reached a feverish pitch in our country and around the world called “The Ground Zero Mosque”.
Our Great Prophet, Muhammad Ibn Abdullah, was faced with this very same type of dilemma in principle when he was given permission by the Quarish that he and the believers in the revelation revealed to him could return to their home in Mecca for the purpose of performing the Hajj or pilgrimage from Medina to Mecca which in reality was in an attempt to build a Mosque at a precious site that lead to the loss of many lives. After traveling that long distance they were met short of their destination by the Quarish army and were told that they could not continue on although they had previously been given permission to do so. The believers, his followers, were intent on going forward despite the fact that it would mean the spilling of blood to do so, because they believed that it was their right to do so considering that the Quarish had previously given them a commitment that they could fulfill this sacred rite.
However, Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) in his wise and G-d inspired leadership accepted the disappointing rejection of the Quarish to avoid the senseless spilling of blood and to maintain the peace that he sought for the Muslims, the Quarish and those who did not believe in Islam.
This is the model that we Muslims believe in and this is the model that we must turn to in this hour of challenge. I ask myself, what would my late and honorable leader Imam W. D. Mohammed do in this moment where the lives and welfare of innocent people are at stake? And in reflecting on his many many teachings, admonishments and examples that he left us with over his life time I conclude that Imam Mohammed would do what I believe all Muslims should do in this hour that threatens to destroy the peace in our great country that we all love so dearly and that is to follow the example of OUR ESTEEM UNIVERSAL LEADER PROPHET MOHAMMED (pbuh).
