ONE CANNOT HEAL A SERIOUS SICKNESS WITH A BAND-AID AND AN ASPIRIN

Dear Muslim Brothers and Sisters, by now most of you have heard of the serious problems that Muslim Journal is facing and is in need of help. Perhaps many of you have read of my many criticisms of the Journal and have concluded that I am celebrating this crisis. Well if you think that, you are very very wrong. I, like most of you, do not want to see the Muslim Journal fail; I sincerely want to see it survive and improve. Yes, I have criticized the paper and its lack of courage to print hard and sobering issues especially those relative to the probate case etc that I believe are highly germane to this community, but I do not want to see the paper close down… This would be a terrible blow for all Muslims in association with the leadership of Imam Mohammed and would create a vacuum that will take the Muslims many years to recover from.

Having said that, I have read of some of the many ideas floating around as to how we can pull together to help the paper survive and I would like to advance not just a single idea but a basic principle that needs to be used in pursuit of a solution to this and any crisis. When one goes to the hospital with multiple problems the doctor will not allow you to just tell him what you think is the problem and then takes your word and begins to give you the medicine that you think will help heal you. On the contrary, the doctor will listen to your assessment of the problem then he will tell you respectfully: take off all of your clothes, slip on this gown, lay on this table, then he begins a head-to-toe analysis or examination of you looking into those things you spoke about and things that you never considered could be the cause of the problem. The doctor will order blood work and various tests, and he/she will collect all of the information that they were able to gather and evaluate it and make an intelligent conclusion based on all of the facts gathered.

What I am saying brothers and sisters is that Muslim Journal needs a complete physical exam. Putting a band-aid on the wound or having the patient take an aspirin and get a good night’s rest is not enough. Muslim Journal is a business so let’s approach the problem as such.

Muslim Journal should bring to the fore all of the realities as to its business existence: is it a corporation, who are the share holders, who owns those shares, does it have a board, when does the board meet, what are its present debts and liabilities and what are its possible potential profits and assets, etc, etc, etc? Once a clear profile of the Journal is made public then business people who have access to large sums of money can and will come to the aid of such a prestigious pillar in our community. Muslim Journal should do some self-introspection and rededicate itself to improving its product and not be offended by criticisms that, if taken seriously, could help improve the paper and its relationship with those whom it depends upon to promote and support it.

Several months back, anticipating this moment with the Journal and considering that stronger and more endowed Newspapers had to make radical changes, I suggested some ideas to the Journal to increase its circulation and still believe these ideas would serve to create a “New Muslim Journal” of sort. I am willing to sit down with the Journal’s esteem editor and all sincere brothers and sisters who want to work to save this great institution once it is made known that such a forum has been or will be established.

As-Salaamu-Alaikum
